Floppies and Lo-Bit
CDs, MCs, vinyl… floppy disks? Yes, it’s true! By using lossy wave compression in conjunction with low bitrates,
one can squeeze a surprising amount of music on a standard 3.5 inch floppy. In effect, the sound will often gain a special warm,
lush quality, and the compression artefacts will take on a life of their own.

OPulent STrangers (2012)
Some Atari ST chiptunes. This is the first music release worldwide that uses the OPUS audio codec. Floppy published on Microbit Records.

memo5 (2012)

Uygur Forests (2010)
Drone music made with one of my favourite PC softsynths, the legendary Orangator. The floppy was supposed to be released on the now defunct Errorcode netlabel, but it never materialized.

Music Disks
Music disks are small stand-alone executables which synthesize music in realtime, as opposed to
WAVs or MP3s, which contain recordings of music. They are meant to be run on specific target hardware, such as home computers or
video game consoles.
Music disks were a common way of distributing computer music before the advent of MP3s and other streaming formats, and still have a
sizeable following within the demoscene and among home computer enthousiasts.
You will need the appropriate hardware, or an emulator to listen to these releases. I recommend using
FUSE to emulate the ZX Spectrum,
EightyOne (Windows) resp.
sz81 (*nix) to emulate the ZX81, and
tilem2 (Windows |
*nix) to emulate TI calculators.

dat fuzz (2014)
This contains the same music as the album release of the same name, but in music disk format, to be run on a ZX Spectrum. With superb graphics code by introspec.

Doppelplusungut
Each December, I meet up with DJ dat zekt. For one
month, we lock ourselves in some basement with a huge pile of obscure equipment, and record a new Doppelplusungut album. The music,
though generally made with a Punk attitude, is very diverse, as we try to explore many different genres, from drone/ambient to
death metal. Another important part of the Doppelplusungut experience is an intergalactic, hyper-dimensional radio play epos, set
against a post-apocalyptic backdrop in which planet Earth has been completely destroyed by an accident at the Large Hadron Collider
in Switzerland.
These CDs are not available online. You can only get them by getting in touch, or at the Disconnect Store in Berlin.
